Scrimshaw is an art form that is considered by some to be the only art form that originated in America, practiced for centuries by the Inuit and other native groups along the Northwest Coast, it was adopted by the Yankee whalers men who began producing scrimshaw on whaling ships between 1817 to 1824 on the Pacific Ocean.  A maker of scrimshaw is known as a scrimshander.  Using only sharp pointed tool and India ink; the scrimshander would intricately etch scenes on the surface of Ivory, bone or tooth normally from the by-products of whales.  Now, the Endangered Species Act and international conventions restrict the harvest and sale of ivory to try to reverse the scarcity of ivory-bearing animals.

Another type of ivory that is readily available and environmentally friendly is fossilized ivory from the mighty Wooly Mammoth or Mastodon these majestic beasts were cousins of today's Elephants. Using ivory from the Wooly Mammoth truly does not endanger any wildlife since these animals have been extinct for over 10,000 years. Our Scrimshaw originals are produced using fossil ivory, as well as some man made materials, so we can truly say that our Scrimshaw products do not endanger any wildlife. 

Renouned artist Roger "HOP" Hopper creates the original engraving using thepainstaking process of incising or engraving lines on the ivory to develop an image.  The original piece is then used to develop a mold from which our beautiful limited edition reproductions are hand cast.  Special ink is then applied to make the image come to life, then the piece is hand sanded and polished to remove any mold marks, etc;  When all of the hand finishing is done the piece is ready to attach to the jewelry fitting.  The result is an afordable beautiful piece of hand made Scrimshaw jewelry featuring nature and wildlife, that will soon become a one of your families treasured heirlooms.
